Warner Bros. Pushes Game of Thrones Toward Its First Theatrical Film

Warner Bros. has officially begun developing the first Game of Thrones feature film, marking a historic expansion of the fantasy franchise beyond television. The project is centered on Aegon I Targaryen’s legendary conquest of Westeros—an era set roughly three centuries before the events of the original HBO series.

According to multiple industry reports, Emmy-nominated writer Beau Willimon—well known for his work on House of Cards and Andor—has already delivered a screenplay to the studio. The adaptation aims to capture the epic sweep of George R.R. Martin’s book universe, with Warner Bros. executives reportedly envisioning a cinematic scale comparable to blockbusters such as Dune.

While script development is underway, no director or cast members have yet been announced, and production has not officially started. Sources suggest that the project’s future may depend on broader shifts in the entertainment industry, including Warner Bros.’ ongoing transition following its acquisition by Paramount Skydance—a merger that could reshape the studio’s slate and priorities.

If completed, the film would be the franchise’s first theatrical release, building on years of successful television expansions. HBO has reinvigorated the Game of Thrones universe with prequels such as House of the Dragon, now entering its third season, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which debuted to strong audience numbers on HBO and Max.

One of the key attractions for audiences is the focus on Aegon the Conqueror—a figure pivotal to Westeros’s history but absent from previous on-screen adaptations. His conquest unified the Six Kingdoms and founded the Targaryen dynasty, which later produced characters like Daenerys Targaryen.
