Innovation studio Unit9 has partnered with Google and TAITO to create a new augmented reality (AR) game called SPACE INVADERS: World Defense to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the iconic arcade game Space Invaders.
The game uses Google’s ARCore Geospatial API to anchor digital content into the physical world with sub-meter accuracy, using an individual’s physical surroundings. It works in conjunction with a mesh of geometric data tied to Google Maps Street View, resulting in an interactive AR gaming experience anchored to the physical world on a global scale.
Players can use their smartphones to scan billboards or other landmarks to activate the game. Once the game is activated, players will see 3D Space Invaders appear in the real world. Players must shoot down the Space Invaders before they reach the top of the screen.
The game also features a “World Dimension” mode, where players can explore a fully virtual 3D world of Space Invaders. This mode is a great way to experience the game without having to go outside.
SPACE INVADERS: World Defense is available to download for free on iOS and Android devices. The game is currently only available in select cities, but it will be rolled out to more cities in the future.
