Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially launched the promotional campaign for Dune: Part Three, releasing a series of character posters and the film’s first trailer, offering audiences their clearest look yet at the final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed science-fiction trilogy. The new materials suggest a darker, more political and emotionally complex conclusion centered on the transformation of Paul Atreides.
Based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, the upcoming installment will close the cinematic arc that began with Dune (2021) and continued with Dune: Part Two (2024), films that together achieved major commercial success and multiple Academy Awards.
A transformed Paul Atreides takes center stage
One of the most discussed elements of the newly released posters is the noticeably altered appearance of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. The imagery presents a more hardened emperor, marked by burn-like scars and glowing blue eyes caused by prolonged exposure to the spice of Arrakis — visual cues signaling the character’s psychological and moral evolution.
The trailer confirms that the story takes place years after the events of the previous film, showing Paul ruling the known universe while confronting the consequences of the religious and political movement created in his name. The narrative explores power, prophecy and resistance as tensions escalate across the galaxy.
Director Denis Villeneuve has described the new film as structurally different from its predecessors, leaning more toward a political thriller tone rather than the contemplative or war-focused storytelling of earlier chapters.
Nine character posters were released ahead of the trailer debut, each featuring close-up portraits under the tagline “The Epic Conclusion.” The campaign highlights both returning figures and new additions to the saga.
Among the returning characters are:
- Zendaya as Chani
- Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica
- Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan
- Javier Bardem as Stilgar
- Jason Momoa returning as Duncan Idaho
The posters also introduce Robert Pattinson as Scytale, a mysterious shapeshifting antagonist whose ambiguous loyalties are expected to play a central role in the story’s conflict.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s Alia Atreides — Paul’s sister — appears prominently as well, signaling a larger role for the character compared to earlier films and hinting at narrative deviations from Herbert’s original depiction.
Narrative clues: politics, legacy and a possible heir
Beyond visual spectacle, the promotional material offers several story hints. The trailer suggests expanding warfare and internal conspiracies surrounding Paul’s rule, while also emphasizing his relationship with Chani, including implications of a child that could reshape the political future of the empire.
This thematic direction aligns closely with Dune Messiah, which examines the dangers of messianic leadership and the burden of absolute power — ideas Villeneuve has repeatedly emphasized as central to his adaptation.
Early footage and imagery indicate a significant tonal shift. Paul is portrayed less as a heroic figure and more as a conflicted ruler struggling with destiny and unintended consequences. Industry observers have noted that the character increasingly resembles a tragic anti-hero shaped by political necessity rather than prophecy.
The film also appears to expand its scale, showcasing larger battles, deeper intrigue and shifting alliances across the universe. Filming took place in locations including Budapest and desert environments captured with IMAX technology, reinforcing the franchise’s cinematic ambition.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release on December 18, 2026, closing a trilogy that has redefined large-scale science fiction cinema in the modern blockbuster era.
