Marilyn Monroe’s image continues to have commercial value more than six decades after her death. On August 18, 2026, Mattel released a new Barbie Signature Marilyn Monroe doll to commemorate the centennial of the actress’s birth, transforming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable looks into a collectible aimed at fans and adult collectors.

The doll recreates Monroe’s appearance from the famous “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” musical number in the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The design features the actress’s signature pink satin dress, an oversized bow, long opera gloves and sparkling jewelry. Mattel developed the product in collaboration with The Estate of Marilyn Monroe LLC, which controls the actress’s name, image, brand and intellectual property rights.

The release is priced at $81 in the United States and became available on August 18 through Mattel Creations and major U.S. retailers. According to Milenio, availability and pricing may vary by country.

The new doll is not Mattel’s first attempt to translate Marilyn Monroe’s image into Barbie form. According to reports, the company previously released a series of Monroe-inspired dolls between 1997 and 2002, recreating other famous outfits from films such as The Seven Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire. Mattel’s relationship with Monroe-inspired dolls dates back at least to 1997.

The strategy allows the company to connect Barbie’s fashion identity with an established cultural icon, while offering collectors another reason to engage with the brand.

A look designed to sell recognition

The choice of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” is particularly strategic because the pink dress worn by Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes has become one of the defining visual references associated with her public image.

The musical number helped consolidate Monroe’s status as a symbol of Hollywood glamour. The song itself originated in the 1949 Broadway musical before being adapted for the 1953 film.

In marketing terms, the product therefore relies on an asset that already exists in popular culture. Consumers familiar with the scene can identify the reference without needing additional explanation.

Monroe was born on June 1, 1926, making 2026 the centennial year of her birth. Mattel’s release arrives during a broader period of commemoration surrounding the actress and her legacy.

For brands, anniversaries of major cultural figures can create particularly valuable moments for reviving intellectual properties. A centennial provides a clear narrative, a defined date and a reason to return a familiar character or image to the market.
